A Motherisk study on PregVit®: assessing the tolerability of alternative prenatal multivitamins

Currently, the Motherisk program at the Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto, Canada) is conducting a study to assess the tolerability of 2 alternative prenatal multivitamins, other than prenatal multivitamins sold over the counter. The study is still enrolling pregnant women who are interested in trying a potentially more tolerable prenatal multivitamin.

Who can participate in the study?
Any pregnant woman who either did not start or discontinued her multivitamins (prenatal or regular) due to nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e. nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn), gastrointestinal medical conditions (i.e. irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, peptic/duodenal ulcer, etc.), or difficulties with the supplement itself (i.e. large tablet size, bitter taste, chalky texture), or taking folic acid alone.

What are the alternative prenatal multivitamins?
Women are randomly assigned to try either PregVit® or Orifer F®. These are 2 prenatal multivitamins that differ from each other, but they are also potentially more tolerable compared to another prenatal multivitamins sold over the counter.

Women of childbearing age:

"All women who could become pregnant and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding need a multivitamin containing folic acid every day. Pregnant women need to ensure that their multivitamin also contains iron. A healthcare professional can help you find the multivitamin that is right for you."
